Tame Impala released his fifth album titled “DeadBeat” on Oct. 17. This album had extremely high expectations because of how good his past few albums were. With over 37.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Impala has become an extremely well-respected artist. With one of his songs having 2 billion+ streams, people were expecting the same kind of energy from his latest album. However, reviews have not been so positive. Here is one person’s perspective on the “DeadBeat” album:
My Old Ways
This song starts with very soothing piano instrumentals and quickly switches to an upbeat rhythm, adding an energetic touch. Based on the lyrics, this song talks about how Impala is starting to switch back to his old ways, reflecting on his life in the past, and how he is frustrated with himself for reverting back to his past. The song ends with a catchy synthesizer rhythm. This song is perfect for just catching a vibe on a late-night car ride. Overall, I give this song a 7.5/10.
No reply
This song starts with a very catchy bass feel, making the song very energetic. In this song, he talks about how sorry he is for not sending back a reply, referring to a relationship of some sort. This song offers a lot of cool instrumental variety throughout, making something always new and exciting going on. 8/10.
Dracula
This song starts off with a variety of clips of Impala’s voice, making a nice chord leading into a new set of instrumentals I’ve never heard before in a song. The song soon transitions to a very Halloween sort of beat, giving it a spooky touch. 6/10.
Loser
The beginning of this song starts with a very clean electric guitar/bass line, giving a very entertaining opening to the song. The song is good, but not extremely entertaining if you’re looking for something exciting. It keeps the same rhythm throughout the song, which loses energy. 5/10.
Oblivion
This song is very boring and bland. It starts off strong, but keeps the same awkward beat throughout the whole song. Throughout the whole song, it’s hard to hear Impala’s voice due to the instrumental-to-voice volume ratio. This definitely isn’t one of my favorite songs of the album. 3/10.
Not My World
This song is very similar to the previous song “Oblivion.” It keeps the same rhythm throughout the whole song, making it very low energy. Towards the middle of the song, some very interesting instrumentals are used. I would’ve loved to have lyrics over it, but unfortunately, that wasn’t delivered. 2/10.
Piece Of Heaven
This song is a huge improvement from the past two songs. It provides a large musical variety, unlike the previous songs. I would put this song on my playlist. It’s a very soothing yet energetic song to keep up with the vibe. The song ends with a beautiful piano piece with some slight vocals over it to really top it off. 8/10
Obsolete
This song is also very similar to “Oblivion,” keeping the same instrumental throughout the whole song. Although I do appreciate the vocal use of this song, it gives it so much emotion and brings the song alive. The ending instrumental is very entertaining, allowing a new variety of the song to appear. 7/10.
Ethereal Connection
This song starts off very interesting yet boring. For the first three mutinies of the song, it is pure instrumentals that give you the feeling of a rave. The song is seven minutes of pure boringness, and you want the feeling of being at a party. I would not recommend this song. 1/10.
See You On Monday(You’re Lost)
This song is very bland, providing the same lyrics and instrumentals over and over again for the first couple of minutes, which could drive away listeners. Towards the end of the song, the song does provide a little more emotion and changes instrumentals, giving it the final touch to end off somewhat strong. 5/10.
Afterthought
This is one of my favorite listens so far of the album. It provides so many different instrumentals and vocals, making the listeners wonder what would come next. In my opinion, there wasn’t a single dull moment in the song; it kept the energy high at all times. 9/10.
End Of Summer
For being the closer of the album, I would’ve expected more from this song. It kept the same rhythm for the majority of the song, making the listener know what to expect. I would’ve liked a more energetic/ entertaining song to close off the album. 3/10.
The outcome of this album was really disappointing. I was expecting a lot more, especially after his last album, “The Slow Rush.” Agreeing with the majority of people, I would give this album a 4.5/10. Many people still consider Tame Impala a rising artist. Even though this album wasn’t his best effort, there should be hope he bounces back with something better.
