The annual Granite Hills tradition is back.
There will be lots of fun costumes and food for everyone to enjoy at the 20th annual Halloween on the Hill event, which takes place during lunch in the amphitheater area on Oct. 31.
This tradition began in 2005, hosted by Ms. Daniel and her FFA class. This event is a fun food festival lunchtime activity, allowing sports and clubs to fundraise by selling food, drinks, snacks, and more.
“Halloween on the Hill was fun because there were a lot of food items that I could buy,” Granite Hills sophomore David Contreras said. “I also liked hanging out with all of my friends.”
Some of the foods that will be available for purchase are esquites (corn in a cup), aguas frescas, tostilocos, pozole, hot cheetos with cheese, soup, tacos, and many more. Prices for food items usually range from $1 to $10.
“My favorite food I bought last year at Halloween on the Hill was the fruit cups; they had a lot of variety,” Granite Hills junior Nadia Garcia said.
While the food vending is taking place, there will also be a costume contest, which students can participate in to win prizes. The contest has two winners based on the two different categories – creativity and scary – so make sure to dress up and compete for some prizes. The judges for this contest are administrators and teachers. One of the winners of last year’s Halloween on the Hill costume contest was the plague doctor.
“It’s fun to participate in the costume contest because it keeps you involved in the school,” Granite Hills junior Fernando Valencia said.
There have been a few changes from the original Halloween on the Hill as ASB has taken over hosting the event. It has become an entire spirit week leading up to Oct. 31 for the main event. ASB puts together fun lunchtime activities all week for students to participate in. Ms. Lozano, a Granite Hills alumnus and current ASB advisor, has been at Granite Hills to experience the early years of this amazing event.
“I think it was really cool how everyone dresses up and how the school comes together,” Lozano said.
This year’s Halloween on the Hill will also feature a performance by the Granite Hills folklorico beginning dancers.
“I think it’s going to be pretty exciting to perform on Halloween on the Hill,” Angela Cuna said. “I think most of us are going to be wearing our Halloween costumes, so that’s exciting.”
