Since Granite Hills High School opened in 1999, only five students on the boys varsity basketball team have reached the 1,000-point milestone.
The students who have reached 1,000 points are Zack Grasmick, Kilon Bradford, Jonah Ruckman, and Angel Perez.
Junior Cruz Campos became the fifth player to reach the milestone in a win over Farmersville on Jan. 3.
“I know it’s not something easy to do,” Campos said. “I just feel very blessed for all the teammates and coaches that helped me to get to where I am at.”
Campos has been a great player for the Grizzlies, playing on the varsity squad since his freshman year.
“Cruz is incredibly intelligent with the game of basketball,” Granite Hills boys basketball coach Bud Luther said. “He understands it. He has a knack to know where to get the rebound, where to make the pass, what’s open.”
Campos brings positive energy and excitement to his teammates and the game. With his innate knowledge of basketball, he can move the ball. He knows where his teammates are supposed to be and he can find openings to pass them the ball.
With Campos’ gifted height, he also plays amazing defense, being able to lock down players, not being afraid to play physically, closing them out, and denying the pass or shot.
Campos is a very good player being well-rounded overall on defense and offense. However, Campos’ biggest contribution to the game of basketball is his scoring ability. Reaching the 1,000-point milestone is a very difficult task.
The average number of students on the boys varsity basketball team is 10-12 players per season. Multiply that by the 25 years Granite Hills has had and you have well over 200 players who have been on the varsity team. That’s only 2 percent of players who have reached 1,000 points.
Campos has shown a high level of individual success as a player at Granite Hills because of his hard work, commitment, years of practice, great teammates, and love for the sport.
“Consistently working, consistently putting in the work, getting shots up in the morning and after practice,” Campos said about the hard work it has taken. “You have to stay consistent with it.”
Campos reached the 1,000-point milestone as a junior. He still has half of his junior season left and his senior season to add to his point total. Campos’ plans after high school are to continue to play basketball wherever he attends school.
